There’s a new way to dodge accountability and it sounds like science.

“The model flagged underperformance.” “The AI recommended the restructure.” “The data said we had to cut the team.”

Same delegation as passing the call to a subordinate. New costume.

Hard decisions aren’t hard because the analysis is unclear. They’re hard because someone has to stand in front of the affected people and own them. When you launder that through an AI output, the team still figures out what happened. They just trust you less for the workaround.

The tell is always the same. The leader didn’t have a view going in. The model gave them one, and they took it because it was deniable. People notice. They might not say it out loud, but the next time something hard needs ownership, you’ve already taught them the answer.

The model didn’t fire anyone. You did. The model didn’t restructure the org. You did. The model gave you cover, and cover is what erodes trust.

This isn’t new. “The data said so” has been a cover story for as long as dashboards have existed. AI just makes the cover thicker and the audit trail longer. The mechanism is the same and the cost is the same.
