Figure retired a fleet of humanoids by teaching them to jump into an electric arc furnace in Imatra, Finland. The custom actuators inside were not supposed to be left in one piece, and Arnold Schwarzenegger had told them to melt the robots. American and Mexican foundries declined to drop a lithium-ion battery into their equipment, so the robots practiced the jump in San Jose, flew to the one foundry that said yes, and had 24 hours and six melts before the steel crusted over.
In the film, Schwarzenegger tells a robot “Hasta la vista, Figure 02” and gives it a thumbs-up on the way in. Figure says the jumps were real, then machined the melted fleet into commemorative bars, which is a thorough way to make sure a discontinued robot does not end up on eBay.
